When editing, I ask myself a number of questions: What should the viewer take away? What thoughts should the edit provoke? What emotions should it convey? How can I keep their attention? What structure should I use?

Throughout the process, I decide what should be shown and what should be suggested, in order to best work with the emotions. I tend to favour images over explanations, including in documentaries, as I believe the message is more effectively conveyed this way.

 

I then adjust the pace to find a balance between calm and tension, while keeping the viewer wanting to know more at every stage.

 

Finally, I seek out external feedback to assess the effectiveness of my work in terms of pacing, emotion and narrative clarity. I apply the same approach to sound design and colour grading, as it helps me take a step back and refine each decision, ensuring that it works equally well for the film team and for those watching it for the first time.
